5 Ways Doubt Destroys Progress (How a Christian Coach Helps You Through It!)
“I just know it’s not going to work!” My client sat, sobbing with her face in her hands. I quietly listened as she continued, “I start, and then doubt destroys my progress!” Dear Reader, have you ever felt like giving up? Did you ever feel stuck? Doubt is a part of the human condition. And it is good for us until doubt destroys our progress. Quiet fear and unrest stop us in our tracks. Momentum and clarity fade. God made us to long for progress. He has gifted each of us with the ability to move forward. To work our way through life and achieve goals. As a Business and Life Coach, I help my clients see their strengths. Together, we create action steps that they can be excited about. Slowly, goals start to be achieved one after another. Clients start uprooting doubt and moving forward. They realize doubt does not define their future. Together, we will review the 5 powerful reasons doubt can destroy progress. We will see how Coaching renews faith and confidence.
- Paralyzing Fear
When doubt takes root, it can paralyze us with fear. Overthinking and analysis will slow progress. In the book of Proverbs 3:5, we are instructed to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall [a]direct your paths.” We simply can’t be pitiful and powerful at the same time. Like waves in the ocean, feelings come and go. It’s decisions that keep us on the path to success. As a Coach, I help you break decisions into clear steps. You will move past confusion and into action. Take a fearful thought and write it down. Then ask yourself, “What small action can I take today?” Then ask yourself, “What if this works after all?” I like Podcaster Mel Robbins’ idea of “The 5 Second Rule.”
Action Step: Whenever you have the urge towards a goal, count backwards and say: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and physically move. I mean, IMMEDIATELY get up and move towards whatever your goal is.
- Distorted Identity
Sitting, questioning who you are takes time and energy. Slowly distorting your identity robs you of your peace. Have you entertained these negative thoughts? “Am I good enough?” “Will people think less of me?” How you see and speak of yourself is powerful. If you don’t know “Who’s” you are, you won’t know “Who” you are. You are a child of the Most High God. He meant for you to live an abundant life in a relationship with Him. In the book of John 10:10, the bible tells us, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” As a Coach, I ask you things like “What are your giftings and strengths?” or “How far have you come?” Questions that quickly remind us of what we have overcome. I’d like to take a quick look at your history of accomplishments.
Action Step: Write down and memorize scriptural truths about you. When doubt comes in, read these out loud.
- Doubt = Wasted Time
Continued doubt equals wasted time. This may include engaging but useless activities like doomscrolling. This leads to an oppressive feeling of annoyance or boredom. Procrastination or stalling is incredibly non-productive. I had a client who continually delayed finishing their degree in Business. I asked them, “How old would they be in five years?” She quietly answered, “Fifty-nine years old.” I then asked, “How would you feel being fifty-nine with a Business Degree?” She enthusiastically said, “Ecstatic!” She went on to secure her degree and two Financial Specialist Certifications. This is what a Coach does: guides with simple questions. It is a ministry of presence. This is valuable in a world of screens and solitude. We need a Coach to help us remember who we are. A reminder of all our gifts and goals.
Action Step: Counter doubt with a truth statement.
Doubt: “I need more training.” Truth: “I am equipped for this step.”
- Disconnected from Purpose
Lack of clarity keeps you disconnected from your purpose. A Coach will work with you to create a road map you can be excited about. Go back to the original reason you set up a goal. Was it to further your career? Perhaps it was to exercise more? Having a Coach is a powerful accountability partner. This is easily achieved with regular check-ins and constructive feedback. You will enjoy a higher success rate with constructive follow-throughs. Staying alert makes it easier to overcome procrastination. The book of Romans 8:28 explains what purpose looks like: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” It’s always good to look up bible verses on things that challenge us. And be sure to create a cheer team to fall back on. This is a group of your most positive friends or family. They will quickly see around corners to help you stay on the right path.
Action Step: Plan simple weekly activities, then complete them. This could be a walk, or cleaning out a closet or purse.
